Diabetic Eye Exam Port Orange | Diabetic Retinopathy Ormond Beach, FL

Diabetic Eye Exam

Diabetes has been becoming increasingly common in past years. With this condition comes a host of other medical issues, one of them being increased risk of eye disease. Diabetic retinopathy is common in patients with uncontrolled diabetes but can occur in any patient with diabetes.

For diabetics, eye exams are of extreme importance when it comes to preventing vision loss.  Changes in the eye can happen rapidly in patients with diabetes, and it is important that you and your doctor stay informed of your eye health. If caught early enough, progression can be slowed significantly.

Diabetics are also at increased risk of developing cataracts, and early cataract development. Cataracts are another big cause of blindness in Americans, affecting almost everyone who is age 60 and older. This condition tends to develop much earlier in those with diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy causes blindness in two ways:

  1. Fragile, abnormal blood vessels develop and leak blood, blurring vision. This is proliferative retinopathy, which is the most advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy.
  2. Fluid leaks into the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. The fluid causes the macula to swell, blurring vision. This is called macular edema.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics are at risk for this disease. This is why it is very important to attend yearly examinations with your eye doctor. The longer someone has diabetes, the more likely they are to get diabetic retinopathy. Around 40 percent of those with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy.
If you have diabetes and are due for your yearly exam, contact us to schedule an appointment today! Remember, the key to protecting your vision is a yearly eye examination.
